Renovating the Slovak Mining Museum

With support from the EEA and Norway Grants, the Slovak Mining Museum is in the process of preserving 46 artefacts in the UNESCO-listed town of Banská Štiavnica.

Several cultural heritage objects in Banská Štiavnica faced the risk of degradation or even annihilation. They were stored in deposits in old historical buildings with unsuitable climatic conditions, without instruments for air condition regulation and sufficient fire protection.

Among the artefacts now being restored with support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are 36 stone objects, including sculptures and epitaphs, and the late Gothic sculpture of St. Barbara from 1506. The oldest stone component to be restored is a 13th century baptistery.

The €410 000 in grant support also allows for the restoration of nine paintworks, oil paintings on canvas and board paintings. So far, 35 artefacts have been restored. The preservation process will be finalised in 2011.
