EU culture prize now open for applications

The EU prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards is Europe’s most prestigious prize in the heritage field. Every year, it honours the most outstanding heritage achievements from across Europe. Entries are now open for the 2015 award.

Three EEA Grants projects were among the 2014 winning entries. Honoured for its educational work, the Hungarian project ‘From a Rusty City to a New Miskolc' won one of the six Grand Prix top prizes. The 'Home for Cooperation', an educational centre in the Buffer Zone of Nicosia in Cyprus, and the 'Historical Route of Torres Vedras' in Portugal were both winners in the 'Conservation' category.

The award recognises excellence, creativity and innovation and aims at promoting high standards and high quality skills in conservation practice. Up to seven entries will be awarded a prize which includes a monetary award of €10 000.

There are four categories for 2015:

  • Conservation - outstanding achievements in the conservation, enhancement and adaptation to new uses, of cultural heritage
  • Research and digitisation - outstanding research which leads to tangible effects in the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage
  • Dedicated service by individuals or organisations - open to individuals or organisations whose contributions over a long period of time demonstrate excellence in the protection, conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage. The contribution should be of a standard which would be considered outstanding in the European context
  • Education, training and awareness-raising - outstanding initiatives related to heritage education, training schemes in cultural heritage conservation, and programmes for raising awareness on cultural heritage
