New NGO fund in Cyprus

On 1 December 2008, a €1.5 million NGO fund was established in Cyprus under the EEA and Norway Grants.

The Government of Cyprus has allocated more than one third of the overall net amount available to support NGOs, the largest proportion amongst the beneficiary states. The €1.5 million set aside will support NGOs in implementing small-scale projects, aimed at improving health and childcare services and at empowering young people to take part in Cypriot civil society.

An estimated 20% of the funding has been set aside for bi-communal projects. The overarching aim of the fund is to strengthen Cypriot civil society, through improving the capacity of non-governmental organisations in Cyprus.
The NGO fund has been met with high interest and anticipation by Cypriot civil society organisations, and a large number of NGOs are expected to attend the launch event in Nicosia on 9 December. Representatives from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The Norwegian Helsinki Committee will also be present at the event.
