Thousands of people have been evacuated and several people have died as a result of the ongoing flooding in Central Europe. The Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia are among the countries affected.
Adapting to climate change is essential for Slovakia, a country that regularly battles overflowing rivers and deals with the consequences of flood damage. While extreme rainfall and droughts cannot be prevented, it is possible to limit the negative impacts through preventive measures. This will in return reduce the economic and social cost resulting from floods.
Through a programme for prevention of floods and droughts, Slovakia receives €12.5 million from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The programme focuses on implementation of strategies and measures that will enhance the resistance against floods and droughts in Slovakia and increased flood expert capacity.
The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration (NVE) and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB) are both involved as donor programme partners, contributing to the programme and playing a key role in facilitating cooperation with donor state partners.
