52% of Romania’s energy needs are covered by coal, gas and oil, with a further 20% of energy supply coming from nuclear power.
Renewable energy solutions, mainly hydropower, constitute around 27% of the country’s total energy production.
Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway have set aside over €8 million for Romania’s renewable energy programme. The funding will be focused on hydropower and geothermal power.
Substantial potential
The Romanian government developed a National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) in 2010. NREAP aims to increase energy consumption from renewable sources to 38% by 2020.
The funds will be used to support the construction or refurbishment of three or more small scale hydropower plants and the construction of one or more geothermal heat plants.
The programme will benefit local public administration, local institutions, enterprises and households.
Bilateral cooperation
To strengthen the exchange of know-how and best practise the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) and the Icelandic National Energy Authority (OS) will participate as programme partners.
Both organisations have long standing experience and expertise in their respective fields.
The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate is the national centre of expertise on hydrology, and is also heavily involved in research and development.
The Icelandic National Energy Authority has expertise in the exploration and development of geothermal resources.
Who can apply?
NVE and OS have been actively involved in the development of the programme, and are committed to taking part in the implementation stage. To achieve this, partnerships between NVE, OS and Romanian entities are encouraged.
