Through the EEA Grants, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, contribute to increase the share of renewable energy in Hungary. The main part of the programme is allocated to projects that will increase the use of geothermal energy for district heating systems in a couple of municipalities throughout Hungary by changing the energy source. This will contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions. Geothermal energy is a form of heat accessible from below the Earth’s surface. The programme also promotes increased awareness and education on the sustainable use of renewable energy.
A call for proposals to implement geothermal based district heating systems and replacing existing fossil fuel based district heating is now open. The deadline for project proposals is 7 April 2014.
Projects may be implemented in partnerships with entities from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The Icelandic National Energy Authority is involved in the implementation of the programme as a donor programme partner.
