Anti-discrimination and free legal services in Budapest

A €400,000 Anti-discrimination and advocacy fund in Budapest finances legal aid for patients in psychiatric care, people with disabilities, victims of sexual abuse and ethnic minorities.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and minority self-governments in Budapest are managing 33 projects aimed at providing counselling, legal assistance and legal representation for the city’s disadvantaged groups. Funding has also been made available to support efforts to decrease prejudice and implement anti-discrimination programs.

Grants were awarded to finance free legal services for the following groups

  • People from the Roma minority, homeless people, people in need of support in housing, people having debts related to paying public utility fees, unemployed persons, solitary old people or potential victims of organised crime in their dwelling;
  • People in psychiatric care and/or young drug users; and
  • People living with disability and/or homosexual people and/or persons released from prison.
