This year has seen the peak of the implementation of the EEA and Norway Grants, with over 6500 projects contracted in the 16 beneficiary countries. In addition to presenting results in selected programmes in each beneficiary country, this year’s annual report places a special focus on the achievements reached within two thematic areas – asylum and migration, and research and scholarship.  Among the results presented within the two areas are:

  • Increased capacity of the Greek asylum service where 50 extra case workers and 80 interpreters have been recruited, and 7847 migrants have received shelter, food, clothing and medical care.
  • 15 000 police officers from Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Romania have been trained, contributing to strengthened border management.
  • 308 research institutions cooperating between the donor and beneficiary countries, including support for 338 PhD and postdoctoral students, and 207 internationally refereed scientific publications.

Working together

Strengthening the political, economic and cultural ties between Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and the 16 beneficiary countries is a key objective of the EEA and Norway Grants. To this end, over half of the programmes funded have programme partners from the donor countries.  Additionally, specific bilateral funds have been set aside in all beneficiary countries for developing bilateral relations with Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

In this year’s report, a special section is devoted to showing the results achieved by working together across the donor and beneficiary countries. These include geothermal cooperation with Iceland, cooperation in the field of education with Liechtenstein, and partnerships with Norwegian entities in fields ranging from justice to environmental protection and green industry innovation.

The annual report is available electronically. Printed copies are available on request from the Financial Mechanism Office.

We hope that you enjoy reading about the results of our work and the cooperation taking place under the EEA and Norway Grants.
