Climate change is already under way and its effects are likely to have far-reaching consequences for human and natural systems. As this year’ flooding of the Danube clearly illustrated, Hungary is no exception, and increased understanding and awareness on impacts of climate change and vulnerability are essential. €7 million is allocated to the ‘Adaptation to Climate Change’ programme.
The main objectives of the programme are to promote a clear understanding of climate change impacts and vulnerability in Hungary, to promote actions for increased climate resilience at local level, to raise awareness of climate change impacts, and to show examples of replicable projects reducing the impacts of climate change.
Two calls for proposals are now open under this programme. The calls support projects in two different areas:
- Pilot projects
- Capacity building for local adaptation work
Around €3 million is made available under the call for pilot projects. The minimum amount is € 400 000, the maximum amount is €800 000.
Around €670 000 million is made available under the call for capacity building for local adaptation work.
Who can apply for funding?
Entities registered in Hungary are eligible to apply as project applicants. The main target groups are relevant public institutes, local and regional governments, universities, research institutes and NGOs.
The programme will foster cooperation between Donor State and Hungarian entities and will contribute to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of adaptation to climate change. Eligible donor project partners are entities registered in the donor countries - Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

When is the application deadline?
The application deadlines for both calls are set to 17 February, 2014.
