Description
The project Women''s rights are human rights is focused on educational activities in the area of gender equality intended for loyalty, specifically for students of primary and secondary schools (age 14-19 years). The main objective of the project is to create space for strengthening gender equality in society. The project activities are therefore mainly oriented to the public and secondary to students of primary and secondary schools.
Summary of project results
The project "Women''s Rights are Human Rights" was created to address the unequal position of women in Slovak society, which is deeply rooted in gender stereotypes. Slovakia has a low gender equality index, indicating that women often face limitations due to traditional expectations regarding their role in family and society. These stereotypes can negatively affect women’s life opportunities, career advancement, and personal freedoms. The project aimed to raise awareness of gender equality and women’s rights, especially among young people in primary and secondary schools. A significant challenge was to reach the public and students in a way that would make them recognize the importance of gender equality, identify stereotypes, and actively contribute to equal opportunities for both women and men.
The project included several key activities focused on education, awareness-raising, and creating spaces for dialogue on gender equality:
Activity 1 - Education: Informal educational activities were conducted for primary and secondary school students aged 14 to 19, focused on gender equality, gender stereotypes, and women''s rights. Lectures were held for 2,596 students, including 1,867 girls (of whom 65 were Roma) and 848 boys (of whom 60 were Roma) across 10 districts in Slovakia, primarily in the Žilina and Prešov regions. This activity was supported by the creation of educational materials:
- A guide for teachers titled "Women''s Rights are Human Rights," which was distributed to schools.
- A booklet for students - "Guide to Gender Stereotypes," tailored to topics relevant to both Roma and non-Roma students.
- Flyers, stickers, and badges for students with messages on gender equality, providing a tangible reminder of the knowledge gained.
Activity 2 - Campaign "Women''s Rights and Human Rights": The project organized four campaigns to raise awareness about gender equality. The campaign was conducted online, where video spots promoting gender equality were shared. In addition, exhibitions were held in Martin (in 2022, 2023, and 2024) and Ružomberok (2024), where educational banners were displayed. Flyers, stickers, and badges were distributed to the public during the campaigns, helping to disseminate information on gender equality to a wider audience.
Activity 3 - Website Redesign: The website of the organization ŽENA V TIESNI underwent a complete redesign, increasing the space for presenting information on gender equality and offering accessible information for the general public and victims of violence.
Activity 4 - Campaign "16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women": This campaign took place from November 25 to December 10 and focused on improving conditions for victims of domestic violence. In addition to online campaigns, exhibitions titled "Step Out of the Circle of Violence" were held in the cities of Martin, Ružomberok, Bratislava, and Prešov. These exhibitions were intended to remember the lives of women who suffered violence and encouraged the public to take a stand against violence against women. Visitors had the opportunity to express their opinions on the issue and support the campaign by taking photos with signs saying "Say No to Violence Against Women."
The project achieved significant results that benefited a wide range of recipients:
Results for students and the public: The project increased awareness among young people about gender equality and women''s rights, especially among students in the primary and secondary schools in the targeted districts. Educational activities, brochures, flyers, and campaign materials helped raise awareness of gender stereotypes and fostered a better understanding of equal rights for women and men. Interaction with young people contributed to a shift in their perception of societal roles.
Results for victims of violence and the broader public: The 16 Days of Activism campaign helped raise awareness about the issue of violence against women, with exhibitions and public support contributing to reducing tolerance for violence in society. By creating a platform for discussion and supporting victims, the campaign enabled their families and communities to better understand this issue.
Results for the organization and access to information: The project significantly increased traffic to the ŽENA V TIESNI website, expanding the reach of its services and information. Consequently, more women experiencing violence now know where to seek help. Overall, the project enhanced the organization’s reputation as a source of relevant information and support for women in need.
