The project focuses on developing intercultural dialogue, communicates important social themes such as tolerance to ethnic groups and minorities, anti-Semitism, dialogue, and large-mindedness through arts. It is based on Partners'' many years'' experience, Norwegian-Slovak cooperation of artists and cultural managers, sharing knowledge and best-practice. They result in several new artistic productions, educational and promotional activities that respond to specific problems in the society and try to improve the critical situation of growing radicalism, hate speech and intolerance in Slovakia. The project will create the Creative hubs / micro-residencies of selected acclaimed Norwegian and Slovak artists and Music bridges / Sounds of Minorities – a series of events including concerts, discussions, lectures/workshops. It will also bring series of educational activities for arts students with bonus topics, such as arts as communication tool, Roma minority songs, the role of women in arts, modern approach to arts education and it will strengthen the bilateral cooperation. Additionally, concerts with lectures on Slovak music and managerial meetings will be organized as an arts management know-how exchange.
Summary of project results
The Building Music Bridges project sought to address challenges related to fostering intercultural dialogue and promoting tolerance through music. It aimed to tackle issues of antisemitism, extremism, and hate speech while emphasizing the inclusion of minority groups, particularly Roma and Jewish communities. The project also sought to address gaps in contemporary music education by introducing innovative teaching methods and promoting collaboration between Slovak and Norwegian artists.
The project implemented a wide range of activities focused on cultural exchange and education:
- Concerts and Performances: Multiple concerts were organized in Slovakia and Norway, featuring Slovak and Norwegian artists. Highlights included performances centered on Roma and Jewish music and concerts like Voices of the Holocaust.
- Educational Workshops: Workshops were held for young artists, students, and the general public, addressing themes such as the role of women in music and the power of art to communicate social messages.
- Composer Competition: A competition for young Slovak composers provided a platform for creating and performing new works, with finalists presenting their compositions at prestigious music events.
- Music Album: The project culminated in the production of a music album, Building Bridges: SPEV, which celebrated Slovak-Norwegian collaboration and highlighted the project’s themes of inclusivity and intercultural understanding.
- Public Engagement Events: Activities included open rehearsals, panel discussions, and public lectures, expanding the project''s reach and encouraging dialogue on social issues.
The project achieved significant outcomes for artists, students, and audiences in Slovakia and Norway. It provided platforms for intercultural collaboration and showcased innovative works by Slovak and Norwegian musicians. By engaging 1,200 participants across various activities, the project enriched cultural understanding and emphasized the role of music in promoting tolerance and unity.
For students and emerging artists, the project enhanced educational opportunities by connecting them with international mentors and providing practical experience through workshops and performances. Minority communities benefited from increased visibility and representation through concerts and discussions that celebrated their cultural heritage.
The broader public gained awareness of societal issues like antisemitism and extremism, fostering dialogue and promoting values of tolerance and inclusion. The project also strengthened bilateral cultural ties between Slovakia and Norway, creating a lasting impact on the cultural and educational landscapes of both countries.
Summary of bilateral results
Collaboration with Norwegian partners Kjell Kalleklev Management (KKM) and International Voice of Justice (IVOJ) was integral to the project''s success. KKM provided expertise in music management, production, and audience development, facilitating connections with renowned Norwegian artists such as Nils Økland and Steinar Raknes. This partnership resulted in the creation of unique Slovak-Norwegian music productions and expanded opportunities for artists on both sides.IVOJ contributed to the project''s educational and social impact by organizing events that highlighted Jewish music and combated antisemitism, including the Voices of the Holocaust program. Their involvement ensured the project addressed key societal issues through a culturally sensitive lens.The project established a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration, with plans to continue the Building Bridges initiative through European tours and further joint productions. This sustained partnership will promote cultural exchange and reinforce the themes of inclusivity and tolerance championed by the project.
