Description

The project Empowering Migrants through Cultural Activities aims to respond to these challenges  and is based on the previous collaboration of its partners. Project EMCA combines and improves already well established activity ([fjúžn] festival) with new tools for cultural awareness raising as well as advocacy for migration issues (joining International Cities of Refuge Network, advancing [fjúžn] on the road).
The support from EEA grants would enable us to host first ICORN artist and pilot the whole program in Slovakia, Bratislava. Another important activity of our project are next two editions of [fjúžn] festival, the biggest cultural event in Slovakia focusing on migration and life and culture of foreigners in our country. In 2020 we will celebrate its 15th year and with the support from EEA grants we would like to cofinance its 16th and 17th edition. This year we have also organized tour around Slovakia with [fjúžn] festival and therefore included as one of the main activities of the EMCA project also [fjúžn] on the road. These activities should help us to intervene in the public space of various towns  around Slovakia in order to highlight the position and role of the new minorities as regular inhabitants of the respective places using different forms of artistic tools and other means in order to reach out to wide public

Summary of project results

The project addressed several interconnected challenges related to the inclusion of migrants in Slovak society. These challenges included societal prejudices, limited opportunities for cultural exchange between migrants and the local population, and a lack of platforms for marginalized groups to share their stories. Additionally, it aimed to combat misinformation and stereotypes, fostering understanding and social cohesion through cultural and artistic activities.

The EMCA project implemented a diverse range of activities:

  • Cultural and artistic programs: It included the renowned [fjúžn] festival, which highlighted the stories and talents of migrants through music, theater, exhibitions, and discussions. This platform created an open space for dialogue and cultural exchange.
  • Workshops and community events: These provided opportunities for migrants and locals to collaborate, promoting mutual understanding and breaking stereotypes.
  • Public awareness campaigns: These aimed to educate the public on issues related to migration, diversity, and inclusion, incorporating social media campaigns and creative storytelling.
  • Development of a communication strategy: Collaborating with the Seesame agency, the project created a long-term communication framework to sustain engagement and partnerships beyond the project timeline.
  • Publications: Practical guides, festival magazines, and media collaborations ensured the project''s reach and sustainability.

The project achieved significant outcomes for various stakeholders:

  • Migrants: It empowered them by providing a platform to share their stories and talents, promoting social integration and reducing prejudice.
  • Local communities: Increased exposure to diverse cultural narratives fostered greater acceptance and understanding of migrants'' contributions to society.
  • The broader public: Through festivals and campaigns, the public gained awareness and a more inclusive perspective on migration and cultural diversity.
  • Policy and communication impact: The creation of a communication strategy and collaboration with media partners enhanced the sustainability of efforts to combat stereotypes and foster inclusion. The [fjúžn] festival reached thousands of people, serving as a bridge between communities and highlighting the value of diversity.

Summary of bilateral results

The EMCA project greatly benefited from its partnership with donors and international collaborators. Key bilateral contributions included:•Knowledge sharing and capacity building: The involvement of partners facilitated the exchange of best practices in cultural programming and inclusion efforts, enriching the project''s approach.•Sustainability and strategy development: The donor partners played a vital role in refining the communication strategy, ensuring the project''s legacy and its ability to secure diverse funding streams.•Strengthened networks: Collaboration expanded connections between Slovak and international cultural organizations, setting a foundation for future cooperative efforts. Plans for continued cooperation include extending the reach of the [fjúžn] festival, further developing communication strategies, and engaging donors and international experts to maintain momentum in fostering inclusion through culture.
