Description

Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and it is happening even more quickly than we feared. In Slovakia today, climate change increases flood and drought frequency, duration and severity, and this affects agriculture, biodiversity, forestry, energy production, tourism, and more general the availability of water resources.

As such, this project aims to exchange bilateral knowledge, experiences, and best practices in an effort to raise awareness and literacy on climate change and its impacts in Slovakia. Practical hard measures for climate change adaptation: min. of 500 cubic meters of rainwater collected, 3 rainwater containers, 1 set of green infrastructure elements for biodiversity support and climate-friendly mobility (green roof on bike station, building homes and watering places for insect, small mammals, birds and lizards, planting biodiversity meadows and flourishing native plants).

Main activities:

  • Installation of rain water collection lake in Bioclimatic park;
  • Installation of photovoltaic panels and necessary equipment;
  •  Training for Slovak project teams will be provided by Norwegian partners to ensure the most effective awareness
  • Organisation of webinars on effective, wise and clean heating using local renewable energy sources within mitigation awareness campaign;
  • Installation of green roof bike station including
  • Organisation of information events within awareness campaign "Climafest

Partnership: The project will be realised with strong bilateral partnership and cooperation aiming at the necessity of climate change action in multiple sectors, including education, training and public awareness. The project partnership is built on cooperation of Slovak non-governmental and governmental organization and 2 Norwegian organisations.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • informal education of public on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on energy savings, water retention, biodiversity and greenery,
  • implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to reach energy savings, rainwater retention, biodiversity, biomass and share of greenery.

Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:

  • workshops – water retention measures to prevent extreme events, biodiversity, biomass production,
  • online webinars – to inform the Slovak households about reducing woodstove emissions,
  • lectured tours – biodiversity, renewable energy, soil, water retentions,
  • installation of rainwater collection lake with information board,
  • collection container,
  • expanded green infrastructure (planted trees),
  • photovoltaic system on the roof (solar energy for electrical daily energy production and wood biomass for heating) with information board,
  • solar charging stations with electric bicycles,
  • green roof,

Overall, 6 awareness raising activities were carried out with more than 2,400 attendees reached.

The Project reached about 400 persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on construction professionals, students (life-long learning) and the public.

Summary of bilateral results

Bilateral Partners, Energy Farm International Foundation, EFIF (NO) and International Development Norway AS (NO), shared knowledge and worked together on soft and hard measures during joint meetings in Slovakia and organised workshops for partners and wide public.
