Description

The project focuses on raising awareness on sustainable housing, as construction industry and households have a considerable effect on climate change. Professionals in construction and the whole society should be informed and understand the importance of pattern changes in building industry and change of our living habits. The project will present low-emission solutions to overcome the irrationality of the current conventional construction approach, methods and technologies that ignore the significant environmental impact of high embodied energy of the building materials, have a poor thermal performance and result in high operational household energy consumption, which contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions. Also, the project highlights solutions in integration of climate change adaptation into housing by reducing imbalances on the ecosystems and respecting the local climate, resources and place. The project objective is to foster an effective engagement of professionals in construction and the general public in support of climate friendly behavior through improved awareness and capacity building on low-emission and climate adaptation solutions in housing.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • informal education of public on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on eco-housing including use of renewable source of energy, greenery and rainwater,
  • implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to support public awareness on low-carbon living, water management, saving resources and support of biodiversity.

Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:

  • demonstrating the “tiny house” concept with clay surfaces and regulating air exchange unit with heat recovery, photovoltaic panels and bioethanol burner as the high technology examples of low-impact and low-carbon building;
  • demonstrating extensive and intensive green roofs for natural cooling of buildings;
  • demonstrating examples of climate change adaptation measures based on greenery and rainwater retention such as retention tanks and raingarden,
  • online training courses to learn people on the topic addressed by the Project,
  • elaboration of infosheets and handbook,
  • eco-housing photo competition to approach and activate general population towards mitigation of climate change in the frame of eco-housing,
  • awareness raising acitivities including eco-housing meetings and eco-housing talks supporting the popularization of the Project themes and dissemination of Project results.

Overall, 6 awareness raising activities were carried out with more than 40 thousands attendees reached.

The Project reached about 300 persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on construction professionals, students (life-long learning) and the public.

Summary of bilateral results

Bilateral Partner, Fosen Folkhighschool, micro enterprise from Norway, shared knowledge on about wood, re-use of materials, building long-lasting houses and window-making/restauration and contributed to development of the concept of “tiny house” promoting eco-housing in Slovakia.
