Description
The overall aim of the Capital City of Bratislava is to increase its resilience against expected risks of climate change and support the transition to carbon neutral city in the near future by gradual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within certain sectors and by minimalizing its carbon footprint. The Project will be implemented via the following main activities:
- Development of the Action Plan for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation up to 2030,
- Complex building renovations and public spaces – Energy efficiency measures,
- Complex building renovations and public spaces – Green and blue measures,
- Measures to increase the city''s infiltration capacity,
- Community building activities.
Within the Project, two Bilateral Project Partners will cooperate. City of Reykjavik (Island) and the Agency for Water and Sewerage Works, City of Bergen (Norway) will be involved in working groups that have the role to develop the Action Plan in relevant thematic areas, invited as a presenter to the Project conference and to other Project events and consulted to develop future adaptation / mitigation actions based on its experience.
In addition, two Slovak Project Partners are involved: the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava that will coordinate and supervise implementation of blue and green measures in public spaces as well as the communication strategy and other community level activities and the Comenius University in Bratislava - Faculty of Natural Sciences that will identify important inputs and indicators for the evaluation reports about climate change adaptation and about mitigation measures in Bratislava over the reporting period.
Target groups of the Project are inhabitants of the Capital city, with focus on elderly and children and youth.
Summary of project results
The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:
- development of the Action Plan for climate change mitigation and adaptation,
- energy efficiency measures in building sector,
- increase adaptability of public spaces by green and blue measures,
- increase of infiltration capacity of public spaces by grey measures,
- public awareness raising on implemented measures.
Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:
- approval of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, which combines the activities of both previous plans (adaptation and mitigation actions) and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 % by 2030.
- complex renovation of 2 public school buildings to reduce CO2 emissions including thermal insulation,
- revitalization of one public space by grey, green-blue adaptation measures including water permeable pavements, planting and revitalization of greenery, lighting,
- dissemination of action plan and raising awareness on climate change among the local population.
Overall, 13 climate change measures were carried out in the city.
The Project reached completion of 1 Action plan for mitigation and adaptation to the Climate Change. Estimated share of 7.98 % of Slovak population benefits from living in more climate change resilient and responsive urban area.
Summary of bilateral results
Bilateral Partners, city of Reykjavik from Iceland and Agency for Water and Sewerage Works from city of Bergen, Norway, actively participated in preparation of the city action plan and provided their experience and expertise in planning and implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in urban environment. Bilateral cooperation was strengthened by trainings and study tours organized in Slovakia, Norway and Iceland. Both capitals, city of Bratislava and city of Reykjavik are members of Climate-neutral and Smart Cities mission, which aims to deliver at least 100 climate-neutral and smart European cities by 2030. Therefore, it is highly presumed that their bilateral cooperation will continue beyond the life of the Project.
