Description
The main goal of the Project is implementation of measures that will contribute to mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the City of Žilina. Within the Project, the Action Plan for Mitigation and Adjustment to Climate Change will be elaborated as a short-term and medium-term strategic document, which will define the city’s activity focused on reduction of CO2 emission and adaptation to climate change.
In addition, hard, investment measures will be carried out covering following topics: Sector of public buildings (reduction of energy intensity of the Kindergarten, application of light colours on buildings), transport (electric cars for food delivery to the elderly), green and blue infrastructure (greenery, re-planting of the city forest, extensive vegetation roof on the Municipal Office), waste management (bio-degradable waste containers), educational activities and publicity.
The Bilateral Project Partner – Tou Scene from Norway will cooperate on elaboration and providing of know-how during the educational activities and publicity.
Summary of project results
The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:
- Elaboration of the Strategy and Action Plan for Adaptation to the Adverse Effects of Climate Change in the City of Žilina,
- Implementation of technical measures to reduce CO2 emissions and overall vulnerability of the urban environment to climate change including mitigation measures in sector building, low emission transportation, green and blue infrastructure measures and waste management. Public awareness raising activities on climate change mitigation and adaptation measures implemented are an integral part of the Project.
As a part of the city action plan soft measures were implemented including information activities for public such as art competition for children involving 6 primary schools and 1 children´s club and presentation of Project activities at schools.
Following individual hard measures on climate change mitigation and adaptation were implemented in the city of Žilina within the Project:
- Reduction of energy intensity of the kindergarten,
- Application of light colors on public buildings,
- Minimizing of energy loss in the power grid in public builidings,
- Measuring and monitoring of CO2 eq. emissions in the city,
- Purchase of two electric cars for food distribution to the elderly
- Revitalization of the city park,
- Roof reconstruction at the Municipal Office of Žilina, with adjustment for an extensive vegetation roof
- Revitalization of the ground surface in front of the Municipal Office building,
- Planting of solitary trees or small groups of trees,
- Line greenery,
- Mobile greenery,
- Revitalization of the forest park,
- Re-planting of the city forest,
- Purchase of containers for kitchen biodegradable waste collection.
Overall, 17 measures on climate change mitigation and adaptation were implemented.
About 1.5 % of Slovak population benefits from living in more climate change resilient and responsive area of city of Žilina.
