Description

The objective of the Project is to link knowledge of climate change mitigation and adaptation with its implementation into environmental education and other science subjects through the project-based teaching and revitalization of the school area into an interior and exterior learning zone with an eco-classroom. The aim of the Project is to incorporate the ideas of the project teaching into the teaching materials and enable students to learn about the local plant and animal species, to take care of them, to monitor the condition of the local environmental components and enable them to process gained information into the students’ scientific projects with their own problem solution. Activities will take place in a created interior and exterior (school garden) learning zone with a learning path and an eco-classroom.

The following measures are in the Project:

- Preparation of educational materials and teaching aids for environmental education on the climate change mitigation and adaptation,

- Building an eco-classrooms with utilisation of natural and technical elements, increasing the share of greenery, promotion of biodiversity, building of components of the green infrastructure, reducing of waste amount and its further use,

The Bilateral Project Partner - Råholt secondary school from Norway will participate in comparison of curriculum, testing of new didactic material, testing the condition of natural elements in Norway, co-organising environmental events and presenting information and outputs of the Project implementation on environmental conference.

In addition, Slovak Project Partners are involved in the Project. The Constantin the Philosopher University in Nitra, Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Secondary Grammar School in the City of Šahy.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • systematic education of students on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on waste reduction and greenery (local plant, biodiversity),
  • implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to support waste separation, biodiversity and share of greenery.

Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:

  • environmental education through updated curricula of existing subjects, new school environmental program focused mainly on plants growing, local plants, biodiversity, waste sorting, educational trail, bio gardening,
  • installation of waste separation bins in school and building composter in school garden,
  • vertical gardens with an irrigation system – (irrigation of surroundings, dust capture, bio material) with installation of ecological information boards,
  • build an aquarium with various fish species,
  • build bird houses,
  • build insect houses,
  • educational centre,
  • planted fruit trees, deciduous woody plants, ornamental bushes and information boards suitable for a project-based education of science subjects and environmental education.

Overall, 5 physical climate change responsive measures were carried out in school and school campus, almost 1,900 students participated the awareness raising campaign and 5 open access education materials were created.

The Project reached almost 2,000 of persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on students and general public as beneficiaries.

Summary of bilateral results

Bilateral Partner, Råholt secondary school (NO), provided educational material and testing new curriculum and other educational materials.
