Description
The Project´s intention is to develop pupils'' awareness of climate change and to develop knowledge of possible ways to maintain a suitable microclimate in the region. In the framework of the Project, the educational garden EDUGA will be created in the school complex. EDUGA will include: a rain garden, a meadow garden, a construction of a simple rainwater collection system using rainwater tanks, climate bathtubs, building an outdoor classroom of natural materials in EDUGA premises, the installation of educational signs, construction of raised beds, the installation of a weather station for education, observation, measurement and comparison of collected data. A range of further activities related to EDUGA will be carried out, e. g. direct instruction teaching (using EDUGA in cross-curricular relationships), workshops for pupils, professional workshop focused on evaluation of collected data with the participation of teachers and invited experts, data monitoring, collection and evaluation, pupils and teachers'' publishing activities focused on the EDUGA project (social media networks and media), pupils'' conference attended by the collaborators from Slovak Environment Agency, The State Forests of the Slovak Republic, Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, The Technical University in Zvolen and guests from schools in the city territory –to present the obtained measurements, observations and comparisons.
Summary of project results
The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:
- systematic education of students on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on plants and birds and rainwater use,
- implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to support biodiversity and water management.
Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:
- environmental education through created worksheets and educational materials,
- creation of the educational garden composed of rain garden, a meadow garden, a rainwater tanks, bird and insect house, outdoor classroom of natural materials, raised beds and weather station,
- Implementation of educational activities for pupils.
Overall, 4 physical climate change responsive measures were carried out in school and school campus, more than 900 students participated the awareness raising campaign and 4 open access education materials were created.
The Project reached more than 600 persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on pupils as beneficiaries.
