Description

Under this Project, the schooll wants improve the environment of the school and increase awareness on climate change (including risks or even threats caused by this change). The school wants to bring children, pupils, teens and adults closer to the existence and functioning of nature and life in it in an interactive way. The sound and image of nature would be in close proximity during and after school (afterschool activities, hobbies) once the green roof and bee garden are built.

Under the soft measures school will create and update educational materials to ensure that pupils are taught about mitigation and adaptation to climate change as a part of existing subjects. School will also update the environmental program to include the topic of mitigation and adaptation to climate change. School will create separate learning blocks and training courses for pupils in the area of mitigation and adaptation to climate change incl. exercise sheets, models. Workshops for teachers about mitigation and adaptation to climate change will be organised.

Under the hard measures the main activities are aimed at increasing the share of greenery (planting melliferous and other plants on the rooftop), building eco-educational areas (bee garden, water drainage system, herb spiral), energy and rainwater saving (green rooftop as a natural insulant), building green infrastructure elements (green roof and bee garden), promoting biodiversity (sustainability of bees and pollinators in an urbanized area).

There are three Slovak Project Partners involved in the Project, the Secondary Vocational School "Under Banoš", the civic association ZADOBE and the civic association EnviroFuture.

The main responsibility of the Partners will be the professional guarantee of implementation of bee-keeping into the curriculum, cooperating in the establishment of the bee class and bee garden.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • systematic education of students on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on energy savings, water retention and greenery,
  • implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to reach energy savings, rainwater retention, biodiversity, bee colonies and share of greenery.

Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:

  • environmental education through updated curricula of existing subjects focused mainly on mitigation and adaptation to climate change, pollinators, bees, energy saving, water retention, green infrastructure, etc.,
  • methodological guide, including the costs and benefits and exact numbers on improved indicators, e.g. the rainwater savings,
  • bee classroom with tools for manufacturing bee products (honey, wax, propolis, etc.),
  • expanded green infrastructure (green roof, meadow, bee garden, herb spiral).

Overall, 5 physical climate change responsive measures were carried out in school and school campus, more than 1,300 students participated the awareness raising campaign and 17 open access education materials were created.

The Project reached more than 1,400 of persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on students and general public as beneficiaries.
