Description

In the region of Novohrad, where organization operates, about 30% of the population belongs to marginalized Roma community. It is also one of the regions that are the least developed in Slovakia with unemployment rate being 13%. Problems Roma minority face here are low standard of living, low level of social and parenting skills, poor eating habits and lack of work skills and habits. The project addresses these challenges by two main activities. Firstly, development of work skills and habits by regular activities in the community garden and farm – activities include caring of the area, plants, animals or working on the production of flowers and vegetables. Secondly, development of parental competencies – guiding mothers to communicate properly with children, assistance in preparation for school, guidance on good hygiene habits, eating habits and healthy food preparation. Partner of the project – non-profit organization Vasa charita provides premises - the garden and the farm. Another role of the partner is to share the experience of working with the target group. 40 people from the Roma community will be involved in the project activities. Overall project goal is to strengthen the position of Roma communities and to increase the standard of their living.

Summary of project results

In the region where we operate, approximately 30% of the population is a marginalized Roma community. Needs and problems of this target groups are unsuitable living conditions, low financial literacy, low level of social, especially parenting skills, poor eating habits, low standard of living, low level of education and lack of work skills and habits. The project therefore focused on strengthening the position of these Roma communities by increasing their parental competences and work skills.

In the project, we implemented activities aimed at the development of work skills in the field of plant and animal care and in the field of working with wood, development of work habits, development of parental competences. In the area of parental competences, we focused on the general development of children (preparation for education in preschool and school age, regular preparation for school), hygiene habits, household care and eating habits. We see the importance of activities that solve basic life skills for the further development of the target group. 65 people were actively involved in the project activities and another 100 people from vulnerable group had benefited from the project.
