Description

Roma children in Slovakia usually do not have any extracurricular activities. They do not spend time meaningfully outside of school hours and do not have any possibilities for self-realization. The project will address these needs by engaging Roma children in Velka Ida municipality to regular, twice a week physical and dance trainings. Children involved in the project will be chosen by the partner of the project - Primary school in Velka Ida. These regular after-school activities will give Roma children opportunity to build stamina, learn responsibility and spend their time meaningfully. Moreover, by creating dance choreography and attending public performance at the end of the project, Roma children will present themselves in public. This will help increase the acceptance and reduce prejudice of majority towards Roma minority. The project is a continuation of a successful project carried out in the 1st and 2nd call, with previously handicappped children in wheelchairs being the target group.

Summary of project results

The main goal of the project was to organize for Roma children regular (twice a week) movement and dance trainings and the creation of a dance group of Roma children. The group consisted of Roma children as well as children from the majority. This resulted in mutual acceptance and tolerance of each other. The main result of the project was the presentation of the rehearsed choreography in front of the public. By creating a space for the presentation of Roma children to the public, it promoted integration of Roma children into the majority society in a non-directive manner. Overall 3 public presentation of the dance group were held with big public attendance. Attending regular activities on the other hand motivated the children to also attend school regularly.
