Description

The Lunik IX in Kosice has the highest Roma population density in Slovakia. Today, the district has a population of around 4,000 and is characterized by a high concentration of people suffering from social exclusion and poverty, extremely high unemployment and low levels of education. Children and young people at Lunik IX do not have the same starting line to life, including entering and operating in a school environment, which is reflected in their low school success, self-esteem, life skills, or success in applications at the labor market. The aim of the project is therefore to: 1) Help these children with school activities – regular tutoring and mentoring, implemented directly in the community. Education will take place through active methods of learning (Heyne method, interactive forms) with a focus on improving their verbal expression and imagination. 2) Bring them the opportunities of a cultural, social and educational nature to which they do not have access to. These activities will be carried out together with children and youth from the majority. Connecting this target group with children from the majority and participating together in social activities will break down barriers and reduce the tension. The project will help to facilitate the integration of young Roma and equalize their chances in life.

Summary of project results

Project was focused on the children and youth of the marginalized Roma community living in the Lunik IX housing estate in Kosice. Project was very beneficial, since it not only strengthened the bond with children who already participated in organizations activities longer time, but also attracted new children and youth. Activities of the project consisted primarily of regular active education meetings, mainly in playful, casual forms. An important aspect is that a routine in the form of regular Monday meetings was created. This regularity helped to make significant changes in childrens education. The educational "trips" within the majority were also very important. More than 200 hours of lessons were realized and more than 20 experiential trips  were organized. New friendships and bonds have been formed. The older children became important role models for the younger ones. 60 vulnerable children and youth participated in the project activities.
