Description

Women in segregated Roma communities are not equal. They are discriminated as members of marginalized minority and as women as well. They suffer from the negative aspects of persistent patriarchal stereotypes and hold inferior position in the family. The project focuses on the target group of about 200 girls and young women aged 13 to 20 years of Roma nationality in regions of Presov and Kosice. These women show the characteristics of marginalization in a segregated environment, and at the same time suffer from gender inequality in the family and community. Through specific activities such as film screenings, workshops and lectures, the project will help this vulnerable group to start making a positive change in their lives, such as having more equal position in the family. The goal will be achieved through the production of a documentary-educational film that will inspire Roma youth to change negative patriarchal stereotypes and to eliminate various forms of violence and multiple discrimination against Roma women in the family and community. The project aims to show them real ways on how to improve the quality of life not only for women but for the whole family and community. The film will present the issue in such a way that it will have a long-term usability and can be used for educational and cultural purposes for many years: in schools, community and pastoral centers and on various platforms and projects dedicated to the education of Roma youth. The film will also be provided to organizations working in the field of gender equality. The role of the partner (ResArtis, oz) in the project is to ensure the production and distribution of the film and cooperation in the organizing project activities. Other activities of the project include the discussions on the role of the woman and her partner in the household, partnerships, socio-pathological phenomena in families and financial management in families.

Summary of project results

The project focused on girls and young women aged 11 to 20 of Roma nationality, who showed characteristics of marginalization in a segregated environment, and at the same time suffered from pronounced gender inequality in the family and in the community. Women in segregated Roma communities do not have equal rights, they are doubly discriminated against: as members of a marginalized minority and as women. That is why it was important to educate Roma girls, to help them break down undesirable patriarchal traditions that are strong in Roma settlements.

The activities of the project - discussions with girls aimed at increasing their motivation to "live differently" were realized in partnership with several municipalities. Thematically, the discussions were designed on a woman''s self-esteem, on the positive qualities of a man and a woman in a relationship, possibilities, opportunities, means of building personal competences that can improve their standard of living (employment, education, housing). Another important activity was the creation of an attractive 30-minute documentary-educational film, which is intended to inspire Roma youth from a segregated environment to change negative patriarchal stereotypes and to eliminate various forms of violence and multiple discrimination of Roma women in the family and community.

Overall, 184 girls and yound women were involved in the project, and activities took place in 11 different municipalities.
