Summary of project results

Project Predjama Sustainable addressed several key challenges in mobility management and sustainability. Project partners worked to reduce traffic without lowering the number of visitors while solving the mobility issues of residents. Sustainable, feasible, and attractive transportation solutions were incorporated into the mobility plan, ensuring minimal interference with nature. Residents were actively involved in the development process, allowing their needs and feedback to shape the plan. Additionally, partners successfully transferred the experiences of our Norwegian partners to Slovenia, adapting their proven solutions. By implementing the mobility plan and conducting an awareness campaign, project activities contributed to changing people’s habits, promoting sustainable behaviour, and ultimately mitigating climate change. Through collaboration, innovation, and a focus on behavioural change, a balanced approach to sustainable mobility, ensuring environmental protection and local well-being was achieved.

The road to the Predjama location was used by locals, visitors who arrived in Postojna by public transport, motorhome travellers, tourists staying in local accommodations, employees of Predjama, stakeholders involved in its management, and visitors who primarily travelled by car.  The main goal of the project was to contribute to mitigating climate change by preparing a mobility plan and implementing key pilot measures, which directly contributed to the program’s output (Improved management of sustainable mobility).

The project contributed to the programme’s direct effect and results in the following ways:

By implementing the mobility plan and measuring traffic, is it able to record changes in traffic patterns and adapt measures that better promoted sustainable travel.

The introduction of regular bus lines for residents and visitors to Predjama increased public transport use, thereby reducing car journeys.

By improving parking facilities, stops, marking cycling routes, and expanding the offer by including local providers, the use of various sustainable mobility options for both visitors and residents was facilitated, which reduced motorized traffic at the location.

Through an awareness campaign, project influenced greater understanding of the importance of using sustainable mobility methods among residents and visitors.

The project achieved significant results in improving mobility in the Predjama area, particularly through increased use of sustainable forms of transportation. The successful cooperation between Slovenian and Norwegian partners strengthened the field of sustainable mobility. Local providers were more involved in the sustainable offer, contributing to the local economy, and the environmental impact of the area was reduced.

These results directly impacted several key stakeholders:

Local residents and visitors benefited from improved mobility options, such as newly established bus connections, which reduced car traffic. The arrangement of parking lots, bus stops, and the installation of an e-bike charging station further supported sustainable mobility.

Cyclists and pedestrians enjoyed newly created circular routes like Erasm''s bicycle path (27 km) and Dragon''s foot path (7.5 km), promoting eco-friendly travel and healthier lifestyles.

Local businesses saw increased participation, with at least three collaborations integrating them into the sustainable mobility offer, boosting local tourism and services.

The environment benefited from reduced motorized traffic, lower emissions, and improved air quality due to the adoption of sustainable travel modes.

By measuring traffic and mobility patterns throughout the project, we recorded a 7% increase in sustainable mobility by the end of the project. The awareness campaign successfully shifted the mentality of both residents and visitors toward the importance of sustainable travel, promoting long-term behavioural changes. These outcomes directly contributed to reducing the environmental footprint of the area and improving overall mobility management.

Summary of bilateral results

The project greatly benefited from having a donor project partner, which made a significant difference in its success. The partnership with Strand municipality from Norway, known for its extensive experience in sustainable mobility and stakeholder engagement, added substantial value. Strand''s involvement ensured the exchange of best practices throughout the project''s duration, particularly in designing the mobility plan. Their expertise in involving local residents and stakeholders in planning and implementation enriched project, enhancing the inclusion of community needs.Strand municipality''s role was crucial during study tours and best practice exchanges, where Slovenian partners learned from Norway''s success in sustainable mobility planning. Their participation in creating awareness-raising materials and public events helped us develop a more effective promotional campaign. This collaboration was made possible through the Norwegian Environmental Agency and the support of the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities, which introduced Strand as a relevant partner for our project. The exchange of best practices fostered a mutual learning environment, where all partners benefited from shared knowledge and continuous communication. This strengthened cooperation between Slovenian and Norwegian partners, enabling both sides to recognize and leverage mutual benefits.Having a donor project partner was vital as it provided access to advanced sustainable mobility solutions and enriched the project with international experience
