Description

Project partners Slovene Philanthropy and Radio Študent (Student Radio), in cooperation with a supporting partner Radio Nova from Norway, address the unequal social and economic status of new migrants in Slovenia. The target group are migrants who moved to Slovenia in the last 10 years from third countries and don’t enjoy the same rights as migrants from the ‘West’. The lack of and unsuitability of state measures in the field of encouraging socialization and integration puts the target group in an unequal and vulnerable position, it also prevents them from actively participating in Slovenian society.
We are going to empower members of the target group to actively advocate for their needs and rights through a series of activities, directed towards increasing the sensibility of the Slovenian public about the position of migrants, strengthening media literacy, communication power and inner cohesiveness of the migrant community and creating conditions for their formal organising. We will carry out a series of trainings which reflect the situation on the ground and specific needs of migrants for successful advocacy. We will run a set of communication activities, directed towards raising awareness of the general public, increasing collaboration and support of other NGOs and influencing the decision makers. Members of the migrant community will be included in all activities as trainers, with which we want to ensure the transfer of skills and long-term endurance of project results.

We expect the project to empower around 50 members of the migrant community for advocacy of their needs and the needs of their community. The new knowledge and experience in the fields of advocacy, media presentation and formal organising will contribute to building their confidence and open new possibilities for presenting cultures of their countries of origin. They will be able to tell their own stories in public, first-hand, and will not need others to tell the stories for them.

Summary of project results

The project addresses the unequal socio-economic situation of so-called new Slovenian migrants who have moved to Slovenia from third countries in the past 10 years and do not enjoy the same rights as immigrants from the west. They have greater problems due to their lack of language skills, access to education and banking services, and are experiencing greater housing shortages.

The project focused on empowering migrants to advocate for their needs and rights, equip them with knowledge about particular rights related to their status, educate them about how various systems in Slovenia operate, introduce them to different employment opportunities and inform them about possibilities of creating organizations, associations and institutes. They also conducted trainings in the field of media presentation and taught migrants to write articles, host radio shows, make videos and manage social networks. At the same time, they were raising awareness of the general public, gaining support from the professional and NGO community and trying to reach decision-makers to discuss integration of migrants in Slovenia.

Members of the migrant community were actively involved in all activities as trainers and practitioners.

Several migrants that were trained during the project remain co-workers of Radio Študent and continue to preprare different radio broadcasts.

Summary of bilateral results

The project partners broadcasts radio shows produced by migrants in Slovenia on its own radio network.
