Description

The objectives of the project consist in improving the conditions of education and health and combating any form of discrimination for 120 people from the disadvantaged urban district Sătmărel, a district in the municipality of Satu Mare. The Roma population of the targeted community accounts for 30.39% of the general population. The community faces serious socio-economic problems like poor housing conditions, lack of stable sources of income, lack of jobs, low level of adult education, high school dropout rates, etc., all these leading to marginalization and social exclusion.

The specific objectives are the following:

• Supporting 40 school children from the disadvantaged Sătmărel community in order to prevent school dropout and create a healthy life style.

• Capacity building for 50 families in order to support their children''s social inclusion and school success.

The target group of the project consists of 120 people of Roma ethnicity: 70 children (6-16 years) and 50 parents.

The main activities of the project include: remedial and literacy activities for 20 children, non-formal education activities (permaculture) for 20 children, other than those previously mentioned, weekly workshops for parents (including topics of specific interest to Roma women -  access to the labour market etc.), and health and care education workshops for 20 adults and 20 children.

Summary of project results

The Sătmărel neighbourhood of the municipality of Satu Mare is one of the largest marginalized urban areas in the town, with a population of 30.39% Roma. Children from Sătmărel have terrible educational circumstances, particularly those from the marginalized Roma minority. This is mostly due to the social issues that these families deal with, issues that have accumulated over time. Poverty and child labour exploitation prevents children from going to school and causes a very high rate of school dropout. Their school attendance is poor and leads to the accumulation of gaps between their level of knowledge, basic competencies and life skills compared to that of their peers from families without social difficulties. Most children from the Roma community end up dropping out of school starting in the 5th and 6th grades and very few end up finishing middle school. Parents with a low level of education fail to recognize the value of education, and lack the necessary resources to help their children succeed in school.
The project aimed at improving the access to education and reducing discrimination for the community in the disadvantaged urban neighbourhood of Sătmărel.
All the objectives were achieved through the activities carried out within the project. Furthermore, the results surpassed early expectations in terms of the goal of inclusive education and school dropout prevention.

The project carried out actions to improve the access to school for children and combat any form of discrimination in the benefit of 120 people from Sătmărel.
Remedial and literacy activities, non-formal education activities for the development of social and relational skills, workshops for parents and health education workshops (related to nutrition, gardening, rest and relaxation, hygiene, exercise, and daily routine) were carried out. Packages to encourage school participation were also distributed.
Through the project, 40 school children benefited from remedial activities to prevent school dropout and create a healthy lifestyle, and for 50 families, the capacity of families to support social inclusion and children''s school success was improved.

The impact of the project on the target community was positive. The beneficiaries'' abilities and skills have been improved as well as their view on the future. Moreover, the project contributed to the development of closer relations between children and parents.
Following the joint involvement of the local NGO and public institution, a better response to the needs identified as priority by the members of the disadvantaged community was ensured and the fact that the actions were carried out through collaboration increased the coherence of the interventions carried out at the local level, having the power to better mobilize local resources for an increased impact of the efforts to support the inclusion of Roma in Satu Mare.
