Description
The project aims to improve the living conditions of the residents of Lăutarilor and Cărămidarilor streets in the city of Jibou, Sălaj county, where the Roma community is in the majority (90%), by:
- ensuring access to the public domestic sewage system for 80 households (during the project, households will be connected to the existing public network that will be expanded);
- increasing the level of understanding among the Roma community of the benefits and the correct way to use the sewage service, at the same time as increasing the level of information among them on combating the spread of the SarsCov-2 virus (running an information campaign through which they will present the benefits brought by the investment and the correct way of using it);
- provision of packages with basic hygiene materials for each household (soap, detergent, disposable masks, hand sanitizer, surface disinfectant etc.).
Summary of project results
The project responded to the needs of the Roma community from Jibou, a small town located in Salaj County. In contrast to the rest of population, people living in the Roma community do not have access to the city’s sewage and water supply networks. A total of 250 Roma citizens lives in this marginalised community, in substandard conditions (i.e. improvised housing, constructed from recycled materials, without access to utilities).
The aim of the project is to contribute to improving the living conditions of Roma by ensuring access to the public sewage system for 80 households and increasing the level of education in the field of health and hygiene for 250 persons.
With the project support, the existing public network was expanded and a number of 80 households of Roma people have been connected.
In order to improve the level of understanding among the Roma community of the benefits and the correct way to use the sewage service, an information campaign was conducted. The information provided in the campaign also included aspects related to personal and home hygiene, preventing the spread of diseases, including SarsCov-2. Additionally, the participants to the campaign received packages with basic hygiene materials for each household (soap, detergents, disinfectants, garbage bags, toilet paper, etc.).
The initiative improved the living conditions of 250 Roma by giving them access to the sewerage network. Roma also became more conscious of the importance of maintaining personal and household hygiene.
