Description

The project aims to increase the inclusion and contribute to the empowerment of about 630 Roma people, over a period of 20 months, through education, health and employment services suitable to their needs.

The project is implemented in 3 communities from Calarasi county, where the main identified needs are the following: preventing of early school drop-out, ensuring young people''s access to decent jobs and providing health services.

The target groups and main activities are the following: 240 children and 120 mothers of children who will be provided with social services, 90 young people and adults who will be provided with employment services; 450 people - children and adults, who will be provided with healt services. Moreover, 60 young Roma, 30 Roma leaders, 24 administration and NGO specialists working with the Roma population and 500 members of the majority community will be involved in anti-discrimination and empowerment activities.

The project will be implemented jointly by the Calarasi County and the Center for Education and Human Rigts (ACEDO).

Summary of project results

The project addressed the disparities between Roma minority and majoritarian population regarding access to education, health services, labour market, in line with the National Strategy for Roma inclusion, and facilitated the dialog between Roma members and the majoritarian population, for combating stigma and discrimination.

Members of 3 Roma communities from Călărași county received integrated services, covering the main communities’ needs: education, health and employment, empowerment for Roma young people and women, and community awareness on non-discrimination of the Roma population.

The project was implemented in partnership by the Calarasi County Administrative Territorial Unit, with the association Center for Education and Human Rights (ACEDO).

Through the project 112 Roma receive empowerment measures, 20 Roma leaders were trained for protecting Roma rights.

500 beneficiaries participated to antidiscrimination campaign.

30 specialists working for local authorities were trained for working with Roma members of community.

168 Roma children received educational services, 53 Roma adults received occupational services, and 172 Roma received health services.

209 Roma received integrated services.

Overall, 715 members of the community received services through the project, and out of them 602 were Roma. The other 113 beneficiaries were non-Roma living in similar conditions with Roma.

The project increased the level of acceptance of the Roma by the general population in daily life (+10,56%).

Educational services for Roma children and their parents, professional integration for young people and adults, and medical services for all the community members helped to reduce disparities in communities with disadvantaged Roma members.

As a result of the empowerment services received through the project, Roma young people and women have better skills and knowledge to defend their rights and to represent the community.
