Description

The project is coordinated by the Lupeni New Horizons Foundation in partnership with 6 schools from Calvini, Gornesti, Piscolt, Sinmihaiu de Campie, Teliu and Viisoara communes, each with over 30% of Roma children. The Covid-19 pandemic revealed the vulnerability of disadvantaged communities, the gap between the children from different families in terms of access to online schooling and the key role of collaboration between the school and the families of children.

The project contributes to increasing the capacity of partner schools to ensure the effective inclusion of Roma children through the strategic and sustainable involvement of Roma and non-Roma parents in school life, through training school teachers for improving family engagement in the school community,  and through improving Roma and non-Roma students'' social emotional skills to facilitate their inclusion in the school community.

Summary of project results

was implemented by a consortium led by , in partnership with 6 schools in the communes of. The ”Champions of inclusion” project responded to the need that the Lupeni New Horizons Foundation perceived that schools with over 30% Roma children, in vulnerable ethnically mixed communities from Calvini (BZ), Gornești (MS), Pișcolt (SM), Sânmihaiu de Câmpie (BN), Teliu (BV) and Viișoara (CJ), often fail to develop genuine collaboration with all students’ families, especially where social solidarity is not yet well understood.

Our project enhanced the partner schools’ capacity to actively engage Roma and non-Roma parents to improve the inclusion of Roma children; 73 teachers learnt to deliver and trialled a 36-hour parental education program; 24 school leaders learnt to think strategically and developed a strategy for the active engagement of Roma and non-Roma parents in the school community for improved inclusion; 68 teachers developed their skills to support the growth of students'' self-confidence, to inspire children to combat discrimination and social exclusion; 42 Roma and 42 non-Roma parents developed their parenting skills and their skills to actively engage in their children’s school; 216 Roma and non-Roma students from the partner schools took part in extracurricular activities in their schools, and in an education camp for their social-emotional development.

The project developed 3 training curricula: 2 for teacher trainers and 1 for teachers training parents, 6 brochures for parents and the Inclusion Champion’s Diary for students.
