Inclusion through tolerance, playing and art! project aims at developing the concept of school inclusion by encouraging Rroma children to participate in education with the support of parents and teachers. The declining availability of students to be interested in actively participating in school activities has become a real problem, as absenteism, early school leaving, poor school and final examinations results are rising. The 5 schools involved in the project are from rural and urban areas, have a great number of Rroma students from young and extremely poor families, and have a weak relationship with their parents.
The project objectives:
O1. Developing competences in inclusive education of teachers working with Rroma children;
O2. Improving the attitude of the 105 Rroma and non-Rroma parents regarding antidiscrimintion through information/formation/counciling
O3. Developing the key competence of culturally sensing and expressing through creative presentation of ideas, experiences and emotions across a variety of domains such as music, literature, sports, visual arts and theatre, of all the 280 students, both Rroma and non-Rroma.
O4 developing 6 optional curricula regarding the multicultural and inclusive environment and 3 innovative materials
to be achieved by organising:
1. Training activities for teachers on inclusive education, the teacher – agent of change, the design of the intellectual outputs to be elaborated in the project;
2. Learning and awareness-rising activities for parents (Family School)
3. Awareness-rising activities regarding social inclusion for students together (Week-end camp for education through playing and art).
Summary of project results
The main difficulties encountered in the five partner schools: low willingness of students to participate in school activities, lack of teachers knowledge and experience regarding an intercultural education, prejudices and mutual distrust between the schools and the Roma community.
Within the project, the County School Inspectorate in Neamt organised for the five partner schools: training courses on inclusive education for teachers, activities for parents facilitating antidiscrimination attitudes, and for their students awareness raising activities through music, literature, sports, visual and performing arts. Three curricula and three educational materials on diversity and inclusion were elaborated.
70 teachers from the partner schools have better competencies/knowledge in what an inclusive school means, how the teacher becomes a change agent and how to elaborate educational materials. 100% of them declared that they improved their knowledge and/ competencies in these fields. The discrimination perceived by the Roma pupils during the project implementation was reduced with 96.55%.
