Description

The current project proposes a hierarchical top-down approach, where the overall goal of describing a physical nanosystem is partitioned into modules and sub-modules, supported by software tools. This approach is addressed to specific parts of general courses physics or materials science, and also to more specialized courses (e.g. Special Topics in Condensed Matter Physics at the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest, Electromagnetism and Semiconductors at Reykjavik University).

The project objective is to improve the quality of education and training in nanoscience, by creation of an innovative framework, which enables an efficient co-design of computational and analytical tools by both teachers and students.

The project will be focused on the development of software tools for research and teaching, targeting small scale research projects. These shall be accompanied by documentation and online tutorials.

On short term, the project will enhance the students’ ability to use computer codes, stimulate them to participate in research projects along with their teachers, and even attract more teachers in research. By stimulating the creative, scientific and technology-related skills, we expect research-industry collaborations to be strengthened on medium and long term.

The project aims at establishing an integrated framework, covering a complete cycle of studies. A certain configuration of modules shall be provided in connection with each study programme: low-level tutorials of methods and ready-made applications for testing (bachelor); detailed description of simulation methods and significant adaptation of given code segments for a specific task (master); full description of the methodology, and possibility of adding new modules (doctoral level).

A long-term collaboration already exists between the University of Bucharest (UB) and Reykjavik University (RU). The collaboration was initiated in 2011.
