Description

The 24 months project increases the institutional capacity of six rural schools in Transylvania with over 20% Roma children to ensure learning for all. In these schools, drop-out rates are high and students perform rather poorly in national evaluations. Most of the parents have very poor literacy skills and little education. Teachers are unprepared to work with children from vulnerable family backgrounds.

We chose a 360-degree approach to inclusion, working with three microsystems that affect the child: the classroom, the school and the community. Overall, 360 students, 150 parents, 90 teachers, 18 school leaders will benefit from the project.

The schools will engage parents in school-based activities to increase social inclusion. Learning activities (both lessons and extracurricular activities) will become more accessible and attractive for all students as adults become emotionally available and receptive to the children’s needs, as teachers gain confidence in using inclusive approaches, and strive to increase the relevance of the curriculum to respond to the interests and needs of Roma children and parents.

Summary of project results

The project supported each partner school’s management team to conduct consultations with local stakeholders to increase inclusion. 114 teachers were trained to a) make learning relevant by using service learning for the benefit of their multicultural community; b) ensure a secure emotional environment for all children; and c) to promote reading aloud and support parents in reading with their children. We created and disseminated 6 school-based curricula.  Parents (330) benefited from activities which led to parents empowered to engage in the school’s decision-making processes. A total of 387 students benefited from IMPACT Clubs that promote social inclusion and Leadership and active citizenship camp, where students learned in very concrete terms about trust - in oneself and in other members of the community; solidarity, courage, perseverance, integrity and responsibility.
