Description

The current project aims to provide support to Ukrainian refugees who enter the country at the Siret border crossing point (Suceava county). The support provided by the project involves psycho-emotional support and products of strict necessity (food and hygienic sanitary products). The implementation of this project is necessary and falls under the category of quick response type grants, because SAMR is the only organization active for this purpose within the Siret border crossing point (Suceava county). The psychoemotional support will be provided by a specialist (social worker or psychologist), a translator (people who will be remunerated from the project budget) and 2 volunteers (contribution in kind from the organization). Concretely, the project proposes the following actions: welcoming refugees and supporting them in a specially designed space that allows an efficient assessment of their needs and providing food, sanitary products and psycho-emotional support and/or supporting refugees in buses. The children will benefit from relaxation activities and games to distract them from the war. The specialist involved (social worker/psychologist) will intervene in this crisis situation in order to mitigate the consequences of the experience
they went through using specific intervention methods and techniques. The translator has an essential contribution because he makes these activities possible. Once the individual/family needs are identified, the project team mobilizes and in collaboration with the local authorities/ISU and other NGOs identifies solutions to the needs: accommodation, transport, temporary/permanent living space, temporary/permanent workplace, and so on. The refugees who enter the country in an organized way by buses choose to transit the country and go to other countries in Europe. In these buses, the project team will be allowed access to provide medical, psycho-emotional, food and hygienic-sanitary support for adults and children.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to provide support to Ukrainian refugees who enter the country at the Siret border crossing
point (Suceava county).

From 05 April to 04 October 2023, through the project #SupportForUkraine at Siret
border crossing point (Suceava county), the Maltese Relief Service in Romania provided support to the
refugees who crossed the border at Siret. Ukrainian refugees still needed help, as the war continues to
intervenĕ in people''s lives, leaving behind unimaginable dramas. Parents with children, families, sick people in
need of medicine cross the border not for a better life, but for safety, to protect the lives of their children. Their
first contact in a foreign country was with the Maltese team and during this time the team was aware of the
responsibility they had.

The Maltese team provided information and psycho-emotional support to the refugees, as well as covering basic needs in addition, from its own resources
(food, hygiene and sanitation). In the 6 months of the project SAMR managed to support 7490 people, giving a
hope of safety for them and their children. Both the information given and the emotional support/donations
helped to establish an emotional as well as physical balance for each refugee.

The Maltese team provided information and psycho-emotional support to 7490 refugees, During these 6 months the collaboration with state authorities, but also with NGOs involved in the refugee crisis, was a strong point to be highlighted. The provision of support was based on the needs of the refugees, and on the basis of this assessment the necessary support - information, direct help and psycho-emotional counselling - had a major
impact.

The first response intervention helped re-establish an emotional and physical comfort for each refugee.

Also, the model was documented in an document - Guidelines for the work with refugees
