Description
The problem identified is the environmental pollution caused by 46 livestock farms concentrated in Timis and Arad counties. They are polluting the air, land and water near 18 localities. The project aims to raise awareness among young people about the effects of their food choices on the environment, health and animals both locally and globally. In this sense, one of the main activities are cooking workshops with local, accessible and vegetable ingredients, which aim to educate direct beneficiaries about non-polluting alternatives for them and to involve them in practical workshop of measuring environmental footprint of food. A booklet will be edited in which the ideas of the beneficiaries of the workshops regarding people''s attitude towards the planet''s resources will be presented. The aim is to raise awareness of the vision of local authorities regarding their relationship with the owners of polluting animal farms. The project supports 1480 pupils from Timiș and Arad counties by involving them in activities of the project to be a part of the solution to the problems identified.
Summary of project results
The project tackled the pressing environmental issue of water, air, and soil pollution caused by industrial pig farms in the vicinity of 19 localities in Timis and Arad counties.
A series of engaging activities—including school presentations, cooking workshops, and "Workshops for the Planet"—were carried out to meet the project’s objectives.
The initiative directly benefited 1,183 students from 17 schools across 16 localities. Among them, 805 students participated in 18 educational trips to Ceala Forest near the Lunca Mureș riverbank, where they engaged in interactive workshops. Additionally, 61 teachers from the region played an active role in the project.
In the project''s final phase, a dissemination conference was held in Timișoara to bring together all stakeholders involved in addressing the environmental issues caused by pig farms. Notably, some teachers became aware of the severity of the problem after participating in the conference.
The positive outcome of the project was that the beneficiaries improved both their cooking skills and their awareness of food sourcing.
