Description

The project will create the necessary framework for increasing the capacity and inclusion of Roma, prioritising the inclusion of young people from Glina, Ilfov County. The school needs solid support in order to provide a quality inclusive education for each child, but the local community also needs support to ensure a better environment for the harmonious development of children.

This project supports the Glina community in developing cognitive skills (additional training, tutoring, mentoring, etc.), through the following activities: (1) involvement of 20 young Roma in a tutoring and mentoring program; (2) training of 30 teachers in the field of quality inclusive education.

The project will also support the development of socio-emotional skills (self-esteem, resilience, belonging to a group, etc.) through the following activities: (1) providing alternative education through music for 20 young Roma; (2) conducting 4 workshops for 20 parents in order to raise awareness on the importance of education in the professional success of children.

After 12 months of working on Roma empowerment and inclusion, the results of the project include: (1) the socio-emotional skills of 20 young Roma from Glina improved by 20%; (2) the interest of Roma and non-Roma parents from Glina towards the importance of education in their children''s professional success increased by 30%; (3) adapting teaching methods to the needs of students among 30 teachers in Glina improved by 50%.

The project creates the framework for the community to make heard it`s voice, especially through young Roma. In the long run, the project is important in building successful role models among young people in the Roma community and beyond. By involving teachers and parents, the success of students in education will become a priority.

The Project Partner will be involved in the selection of the beneficiaries and in the implementation of the programme of alternative education through music.

Summary of project results

Between December 2021 and February 2023, the integrated students-parents-school approach was implemented in Alternative Education Club - Music for All project in order to facilitate equitable access to education.

Activities were carried out through non-formal methods and were centered on music as an alternative tool in education. The training of teaching staff in the field of inclusivity so that they adopt the approach centered on the each child''s needs, the organization of workshops with parents in order to create a solid relationship with the school, but also the socio-emotional support of students through musical, mentoring and tutoring activities were the priorities of the project with the aim of to create a (more) inclusive environment in the community of Bobesti, Glina.

31 students benefited from mentoring and alternative education through music workshops, 24 parents participated in sessions about the awareness and the importance of supporting students'' educational background, 30 teachers participated in training, after which 217 students benefited from workshops on diversity and inclusion. In the end, the project contributed to increasing the self-esteem of students, parents and teaching staff and thus promoted inclusive and quality education. Following the implementation of the project, the two small organizations became familiar with the management of a project of this scale in order to improve the community of Bobesti. A lesson learned is that there is a need to train resource persons in the community in order to manage the intervention and gain the trust of the community members.
