Description

The project aims to determine positive changes in attitudes and practices regarding the inclusion of women from 3 multi-ethnic rural communities by increasing their capacity in terms of knowing and asserting their rights, involving them in finding solutions to their problems, through the development of activities of integration and participation to community life, including the decision-making process. Prejudices regarding the involvement of women in areas as politics, labor market, and education demonstrate the invisible barriers women must face in order to achieve equal opportunities. Based on the Recommendations contained in the Report on Romania issued by the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the Strategy for the Inclusion of Romanian citizens belonging to Roma minority, plus the results of the consultations carried out in the communities, a series of activities have been drafted. The Storytellers Club will be attended by 60 mothers who will develop new parenting and literacy skills, increase their self-esteem, become part of a multi-ethnic support community. They will organize 4 community events/ locality that will bring together members of the Roma and non-Roma community in various activities of multicultural dialogue. The information and awareness campaign will include meetings on women''s rights and health education open to all the women in the community that will end with a debate on presenting identified needs, future advocacy initiatives and women''s involvement in the community. The activity of organizational development will be carried out by the Norwegian partner who will share its expertise on Monitoring and Evaluation and Involvement of the beneficiaries.

Summary of project results

Gender inequality is a strong mentality rooted in rural communities in Romania and results in poor participation of women in public life. The project responded to the need of changing the traditional mentalities on the role of women in the community'' life, as well as in raising the interest in literacy for young mothers in rural vulnerable communities.

311 women (148 Roma and 163 non-Roma) from Curcani, Soldanu and Luica (Calarasi county) participated in health education and human/women rights campaign, reading clubs for mothers and community actions (cleaning campaigns, theater play, intercultural activities) together with other community members: 1508 participants in the project, 851 unique beneficiaries.

Through the activities within the project, the promotor managed to work closely with women from rural interethnic communities, to train, motivate and stimulate them to become a factor of change in their communities. An important role in the approach of the beneficiaries and the design of the implemented activities, had the Norvegian NGO partner: Bjerkaker LaeringsLab (training provided for the promotor’s staff and field visits). In each locality a women initiative group has been created as a model of civic participation for the community members, capable to produce change on medium and long term.
