Description

The problem addressed by our project is the perpetuation of social exclusion in the multiple discriminated communities (economically, ethnically, based on age, gender, sexual orientation and disability) from disadvantaged urban areas in Bucharest. The project brings added value from an INTERSECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE by establishing an intersectional community center, to address the phenomenon of social exclusion, its multiple forms, as well as the processes of reproduction of social inequalities that maintain the identified problem. The AIM is to increase the inclusion and empowerment of vulnerable groups (young people, Roma, LGBTI, women, unemployed, people with disabilities or at risk of poverty) who face multiple discrimination in enclaves with disadvantaged communities in Bucharest. The beneficiaries of the project are 1470 people at risk of poverty and social exclusion, of which at least 360 are Roma people, 800 young people (of which 200 Roma), 800 women and young people (of which 200 Roma), 150 LGBTI people and 30 people with disabilities, which will be involved in ACTIVITIES: of non-formal education, personal development and psycho-hygiene workshops, permanent career support, biannual job fair, interventions for mental and reproductive health, legal counseling in social justice, including housing, awareness campaign and training in community organization and construction, organizing community consultations and coagulation events, community leadership training in the field of human rights and anti-discrimination, awareness campaign and combating discrimination from an intersectional perspective, as well as organizational development activities for applicant and partner. PARTNERSHIP with the E-Romnja Association brings added value precisely from the intersectional perspective with which the association is already working to defend and promote the rights of Roma women.

Summary of project results

The project was initiated to address the challenges of poverty and social exclusion faced by various vulnerable groups, including Roma, youth, women and young women, LGBTI people, and people with disabilities. These groups frequently face discrimination, lack of access to essential resources, and limited personal and professional development opportunities.

The project established an Intersectional Community Center in Bucharest, designed to serve vulnerable communities such as youth, women, Roma, LGBTI, and economically disadvantaged groups. The center offered various educational and developmental activities, including non-formal education through arts, personal development and psycho-hygiene workshops, career support, job fairs, psychological and reproductive health counseling, and material support through a social store. Additionally, the project ran campaigns to raise awareness and develop skills for educational and occupational integration, organized community engagement events and provided leadership training and mentoring. It also focused on intersectional discrimination awareness and advocacy through podcasts, research publications, and community festivals.

The project significantly impacted 1,660 individuals at risk of poverty and social exclusion in Bucharest, including Roma, youth, women, LGBTI individuals, and persons with disabilities, achieving all its targets. The Intersectional Community Center INTERSECT hosted free activities such as artistic and personal development workshops, benefiting over 160 children and youth. Career support services reached 197 beneficiaries, and job fairs facilitated employment opportunities for 120 job seekers. Psychological counseling and reproductive health interventions supported 100 individuals each, while the social store provided material assistance to at least 1,236 beneficiaries. Legal counseling in social justice and housing aided 34 individuals. The project also fostered community engagement and leadership, involving 891 individuals in organizational activities, 36 GenderTalk meetings, and leadership training for 86 participants. Awareness campaigns and community festivals mobilized 425 participants and reached 5,000 people to combat intersectional discrimination. These efforts collectively enhanced the inclusion, empowerment, and well-being of the targeted vulnerable groups.
