Description
In 4 communes of Jud. Sibiu (communes of Mosna, Bazna, Blajel and Hoghilag) the economic and social disparities between the Roma population and the other ethnic groups are very large, and within the group, the gender equity balance is unbalanced. Roma citizens are not fully accepted in activities initiated by other members of the community, have limited access to resources, jobs and income-generating activities, and benefit from limited medical, social and educational services. Every month in these municipalities there are social aid applications, all of which are submitted by Roma people.
The project aims to reduce the gaps between the Roma population and other members of the community and to balance the status of women who are most exposed to discrimination and social exclusion. The method proposed by the project is poultry farming. The beneficiaries of the project are mainly the most vulnerable people (about 600 people). They will receive chickens, feed and incubators and after the end of the first production cycle, they will donate a package of chickens to indirect beneficiaries selected according to the same principles. The chicken meat and eggs will initially satisfy the family''s need for food, and the financial needs will be covered by the development of the poultry micro farm and the sale.
The aim of the project is the sustainable and balanced development of the communities involved. Poultry rearing will be the trigger for deep transformations, boosting participatory development processes, resulting in economic progress and harmonious relationships between community members.
Summary of project results
The project aimed to transform the residents of four communes belonging to the Mediaș Plateau LAG in Sibiu County into active citizens involved in the sustainable development of their communities. The beneficiaries of the project were vulnerable Roma individuals. The commune of Moșna was selected as the leader of the consortium, which extended to neighboring communes: Valea Viilor, Hoghilag, Dumbrăveni, and Brateiu; a total of 12 rural localities. In the communities included in the project, economic and social disparities between the Roma population and other ethnic groups were mitigated, and within the groups, the balance of gender equity was reestablished. The goal of the project was the sustainable and balanced development of the involved communities
Through active citizenship and the involvement of all community members, the gaps between Roma and other members of society were reduced, and women achieved a status closer to that of their husbands. Poultry farming served as a catalyst for profound transformations, energizing participatory development processes, resulting in economic progress and harmonious relationships between ethnic groups. Concrete activities of the project included: distributing 600 packages of hatched chicks (20 chicks + 10 kg of feed), organizing 3 poultry farming courses attended by 142 people, distributing 75 egg incubators, organizing discussion sessions with Roma women in the community on gender balance (139 people), organizing cleanup actions with 217 participants, including students and teachers, and providing holiday food packages to 60 families. Throughout the project, the Facebook page www.facebook.com/cetateniactivi was updated with weekly posts, including announcements about upcoming actions and descriptions of weekly activities. In December 2023, we had 652 followers, and the project website: www.cetateniactivi.ro, had 1,410 unique users
