Description

The crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the vulnerability of people already living in difficult conditions, as the Roma community from Iazu-Cojasca)., where  25  people are infected and other 50 are in isolation. With an ambulatory care unit served by only one doctor who is also a nurse and the first hospital located 50 km away, the community of  Iazu lacks support for effective measures to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The project aims to support the respect of the right to health protection for the 3.025 inhabitants of Iazu village by providing  them with personal protective materials (reusable masks, hygienic-sanitary supplies) and running an information and education campaign  for the population and public institutions. Moreover, in Iazu there are problems with distance learning. All children are Roma  who face poverty, being  deprived of any communication technology and internet access. Through this project, the school in Iazu will be equipped  with necessary IT equipment (4 computers and one multifunctional printer) in order to facilitate the access to education. In the absence of tablets and Internet, printing and distributing educational materials to every family with children is an alternative way to ensure the access to education for all 411 students of Iazu Primary School. The project is carried out in close collaboration with Cojasca Municipality and Iazu Primary School, with which Protagonists in education Association has a long-standing collaboration, but also with other public institutions from  the commune (ambulatory care unit, police station, church).

Summary of project results

The project aimed to offer support to all 3.025 inhabitants from Iazu village during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to make sure that all citizens are provided with equal health care support and aid. Moreover, there were problems regarding the implementation of online education, given the fact that many families face poverty. Within the project, inhabitants were equppied with personal protective materials and an informational campaign was implemented, in order to educate the population and public institutions about prevention measures and fundamental human rights. Training citizens in various information points in the community and providing brochures was essential in preventing the transmission of SARS-COV-2. Another important objective of the project was to improve access to education for all 408 children attending school. In order to do that, the school was equipped with IT devices and teachers were trained on identifying educational alternatives. A Resource Library for grades 0-4 for children was created, in order to adapt online teaching methods and make them more inclusive. In order to facilitate the return of children to face-to-face education, pexiglas assembly works were carried out in the classrooms. The project was carried out in collaboration with Iazu Primary School but also with other public institutions. These institutions were included in the information and prevention campaign and received protective materials. The organization was able to contribute to the prevention of the COVID-19 infection and it was able to create educational resoruces for children, which can be used after the finalization of the project.
