Description

The Roma communities in Ludesti, Fetesti and Barcea are severely affected by the new type of Coronavirus having over 35 confirmed cases and 75 vulnerable families in desperate situations due to the lack of food. The pandemic context interferes with the rights to life and health that are endangered and creates premises for an increased risk of local conflicts and abusive intervention of law enforcement agencies.

According to local assessments vulnerable population is marginalized in terms of the provision of support by local authorities.

Within the project information on Covid-19 will be provided and activities aimed at raising awareness on the need to comply with the Covid prevention and protection measures will be conducted. The project includes mediation activities to ensure the compliance with specific measures, training on human rights and combating gender based violence and domestic violence, monitoring of the emergency measures implementation and monitoring of the law enforcement intervention from a human rights perspective.

The project aims at creating an inclusive environment of cooperation within the three mentioned localities in order to ensure human rights, combat domestic violence and develop a favorable human rights attitude among citizens. It is expected that 330 people will develop a favorable attitude towards human rights, 15 leaders will improve their knowledge in mediation and human rights; stakeholders will work together to limit the spread of COVID-19 virus and respect human rights; 75 Families will receive direct support to overcome the crisis situation; 180 vulnerable women will be empowered to avoid being victims of domestic violence.

Summary of project results

The Roma communities in Barbulesti, Fetesti and Barcea were severely affected by the coronavirus, endangering their right to life and health. From the needs analysis conducted before the implementation of the project, the local authorities were neglecting the vulnerable population in offering support. The project aimed to create an inclusive environment in the 3 localities in order to respect human rights and to combat domestic violence and develop a pro-human rights attitude among citizens. During the implementation of the project a social media campaign was implemented, in order to spread information regarding COVID-19 and to raise awareness of the need to comply with the measures imposed by the authorities. In total, during the social media campaign, 65,127 people were reached. Throughout the project, the organization kept in touch with community members and made sure that vulnerable families were supported by authorities with food and disinfectants. Letters were sent to the municipalities and Public Health institutions requesting data on families who received support, respectively, information about cases and quarantined persons.  As part of the project, 7 courses regarding Human Rights and Mediation were held, with a total of 93 participants. Moreover, 6 thematic workshops on information and empowerment of women took place with a total of 183 women as participants. Services for victims of domestic violence were provided by the authorities with the support of local facilitators. Three more trainings were held, namely the trainings of specialists and monitoring of abuses, where 27 participants learned about intervention techniques, interview techniques and strategies. Within the project, important partnerships between the organization and local authorities were made, which would ensure the sustainability of the activities and create a strong collaboration in the future.
