Description

The issue is the urgency to respond to Climate Changes and its effects. Cuidar Braga II aims to execute options for adapting the municipality''s strategy for climate change adaptation (EMAAC), through the installation and promotion of a community Biotrituration Center. To carry out the proposal, the promoter designed two technical activities, which integrate the gathering of partners, namely local authorities (e.g., parishes) and forest managers, who will be able to benefit from the equipment to crush biomass in loco and boost the action, and the building of the Biotrituration Center for admission, processing (crushing) and forwarding of green/forest biomass delivered by citizens and partners. Regarding the valorisation of the byproduct, which is intended to be distributed free of charge to those delivering biomass, promoting therefore a circular economy, the municipality will be assisted by the municipal company BRAVAL - Valorisation and Treatment of Solid Waste.

Summary of project results

This project pursued the operationalization of options for adapting the Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (EMAAC) of the municipality, through the installation and promotion of the community Biocrushing Center, and the free availability of this service to the public, thus promoting the change of risky behaviors, such as burning to eliminate leftovers. In this way, the aim is to reduce the number of fires that start in the uncontrolled burning and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases through bioshredding of leftovers instead of burning.

Execution of two technical activities that went through the establishing a partnership with local authorities and forest managers and by infrastructure of the Biocrushing Center for admission, processing (crushing) and forwarding of green/forest biomass delivered by citizens and partners.

The activities carried out in this project already allowed to assess concrete data about the results achieved in terms of reducing the adverse effects of pollution and other human activities, as well as promoting resilience to climate change.

The use of the bioshredder to eliminate woody forest residues and agricultural, directly contributes to compliance with the measures established in strategy for adapting to climate change, primarily due to the pedagogical effect of changing behaviors and not emitting greenhouse gases, benefiting the approximately 190,000 inhabitants of the municipality of Braga.

So far, the activities carried out in this project promote the reduction of the effects adverse effects from pollution and other human activities. Since the opening of the center biocrushing, the service was requested 45 times, a number higher than the previous year with the caring braga I project.

The amount of crushed biomass originating from private or public sector waste implementation of fuel management bands under public responsibility, is slightly lower than the previous year. At this time, 75 tons of crushed leftovers, corresponding to 118 tons of CO2 not emitted for the atmosphere, if they were eliminated using fire.
