Description
The issue is the need of standards for the construction sector that promote the circularity of materials and processes. The project CLOSER - Close to Resources Recovery pursuits the development of a guide for preliminary demolition and/or renovation audits applicable to the Portuguese reality.
For the implementation of the proposed guide it is foreseen to: analyse the possible scenarios for the pre-audits; outline national recommendations to be included in the pre-audit guide; suggest operational measures for the implementation of the pre-audits, and apply the methodology developed in the guide to a real demolition and/or renovation project.
Summary of project results
In the construction sector (CS), the closing of material cycles is the driving force for the transition from linear to circular economy. In this context, in addition to the minimization of materials discarded as waste, the reintroduction of these materials in the cycle as raw materials is an extremely relevant target. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) represents about one third of waste generated worldwide and is mainly made up of mineral resources that can be recovered. CDW processing plays a key role in keeping those materials in the production cycle for a longer period whilst maximizing their value by ensuring suitable quality for the intended application. To achieve this objective, the EU Construction and Demolition Waste Management Protocol recognize the essential role of predemolition and/or rehabilitation audits and selective dismantling. In 2018, the European and elements as well as the local construction typologies, underline the need for the development of guides to support pre-audits at Member-State level. The main advantages of carrying out the demolition and/or renovation pre-audits are: i) data retrieval and provision of information to all stakeholders involved in the process; ii) presenting possible scenarios for reuse and recycling of identified materials; iii) defining recovery targets to be achieved based on the CDW quantities and accessibility.
Actitivites of the project were:
T1 – Project Management;
T2 – Conceptual Framework;
T3 – Stakeholders Survey;
T4 – Portuguese Guide;
T5 – Case Study;
T6 – Implementation Policies;
T7 – Dissemination.
Apply the pre-demolition audit inventory to one case study and enlage that to all demolition buildings.
