Description

The “Achimpa - Citizenship Education Programme” project has the general objective of promoting education for Human Rights, citizenship and youth participation in the context of 4 school clusters in the northern region of Portugal. In this context, it aims to promote civic awareness and socio-emotional skills among students in the 3rd cycle of schooling, as well as deepen knowledge about Human Rights and their relevance, encourage the involvement and participation of young people in the school context, through the creation of citizenship clubs for students and discussion forums on good practices with teachers, technicians and leaders of student associations.

Summary of project results

Achimpa is a project that promoted citizenship education and youth participation in a school context. It aimed to create a vision of a school that nurtures and develops diverse learning processes and strategies, activates students'' thinking skills, and creates true learning communities by promoting a more participatory, empathetic, and egalitarian learning environment.

Over the course of 16 months, the ACHIMPA - Citizenship Education Program was developed, tested, and evaluated, resulting in a Technical Manual covering topics such as Human Rights, Conscious Consumption (environment), Gender Equality, Intercultural Diversity, and Mental Health, with 17 sessions of 45 minutes each. A total of 57 teachers and technicians from school clusters and community projects were trained, becoming multiplier agents of the program. Additionally, 18 Achimpa programs were implemented, involving 308 secondary school students. Four Citizenship Clubs were organized, providing spaces for debate on community challenges through artistic practices, leading to human rights campaigns such as theater plays, music, photography exhibitions, and tile panels. A Booklet on Good Practices in Youth Participation was also produced with the involvement of various educational agents.

In quantitative terms, the following was achieved:

- 57 professional staff trained;

- 308 youths mobilised by NGOs to engage in human rights work;

- 4 awareness-raising campaigns carried out;

- 86% share of target group showing concern for human rights.

In terms of capacity building, the promoter had already developed an action plan based on a needs assessment conducted during a previous ACF project. This led to the development of a strategic organizational plan with a specific focus on financial sustainability and fundraising.

All proposed targets were met and exceeded.
