Description

By promoting human rights, specifically those of the elderly, the CENTROS LOCAIS DE EDUCAÇÃO COMUNITÁRIA project aims to strengthen social cohesion by fostering active citizenship and ageing through the integration and involvement of the elderly population in the community. Focusing its action in the western region of Portugal, the project seeks to attract and train volunteers and promote awareness campaigns and itinerant intergenerational meetings.

Summary of project results

The project was implemented in the municipality of Torres Vedras and aimed to address the isolation of the elderly and their difficulty in actively participating in the community. It developed various cultural and recreational activities and intergenerational meetings, promoting the fight against loneliness and isolation and encouraging active ageing. Additionally, the project intended to sensitize the younger population to greater respect and appreciation for the senior community.

The following activities were carried out:

- 17 campaigns on social media.

- Community awareness workshops on the rights of the elderly.

- Final conference on the rights of the elderly.

- Intergenerational meetings involving young people and older adults.

- Volunteer training focusing on the rights of the elderly.

- Cultural activities for seniors, such as film screenings, live storytelling and dance gatherings

The project established the groundwork for replication and continuation through citizen groups in three different locations within the municipality of Torres Vedras.

In quantitative terms, the following was achieved:

- 119 youths mobilised by NGOs to engage in human rights work;

- 17 awareness raising campaigns carried out;

- 77% share of target group showing concern for human rights.

In terms of capacity building, the promoter carried out a needs assessment and prepared an action plan.

All proposed targets were met and exceeded.
