Description
Using cinema as a tool to deconstruct stereotypes and emancipate and empower both society at large and individuals, the project “O Clube de Cinema de Campanhã” involves the creation of a cinema club with the aim of strengthening the democratic culture and civic awareness of the population living in the parish of Campanhã. The main component of the project will be the training of around 40 young people at socio-economic risk through active community participation involving formal and informal mediators. Sessions will also be organised at schools and in the community, with debates, workshops and other activities open to the community to increase the social engagement of locals with the territory.
Summary of project results
It was a collaborative project with local intervention in the city of Porto that used cinema as a tool for debate and reflection on human rights, including topics such as inequalities, poverty, territory, education, work, youth, and other pressing social issues.
Over twenty-one months, and with a diverse network of local partners, the project held dozens of film sessions, dynamic activities, games, debates, workshops, walks, and artistic training that helped train hundreds of young students. It was also possible to take sixteen young people and a teacher to a film festival in Haugesund, Norway. This training trip had a significant impact on all participants and brought media visibility to these young people, who took part in six short films currently on the film festival circuit.
Using non-formal education methodologies and with the support of various artists, teachers, institutional leaders, and informal mediators, several young people and their families from this territory participated in a diverse and participatory program that revitalized and enhanced often stigmatized areas of the city. The project not only saw its main objectives fulfilled by using cinema as a tool for thought and practice for more active citizenship, but it also exceeded expectations due to the great participation in its sessions and workshops, the involvement of all partners, and the commitment of young people—the main target—who dedicated themselves to the project''s mission. These young people now have the will and tools to continue carrying out similar actions autonomously.
In quantitative terms, the following was achieved:
- 41 volunteers recruited by supported NGOs;
- 29 civic initiatives led by supported NGOs;
- 100% share of target group showing civic concerns.
In terms of capacity building, the promoter had already developed an action plan based on a needs assessment conducted during a previous ACF project. This led to the training of seven professionals in project management and marketing.
