Description
Aimed at 250 young people under the age of 30, the “Ativa-te” project will involve two editions of a film festival focused on democracy and civic participation. The screening of films will be followed by debates with the participation of NGOs working on the issues addressed in the films, and these debates will be recorded and made available online. A “Ponto Ativa-te!” station will also be set up on the campus of Setúbal Polytechnic Institute, offering information about the project, the NGOs invited, and the themes addressed, as well as challenges that actively promote volunteering through actions in the territory.
Summary of project results
Recognizing cinema as a powerful tool for raising awareness about the SDGs, human rights, and democracy, the project aimed to engage a young audience (up to 30 years old) through film screenings. These screenings were followed by debates with specialists and representatives from civil society organizations (such as NGOs) and/or conversations with directors and actors.
Eighteen thematic campaigns were implemented. These campaigns covered topics such as ocean conservation, mental health, women''s rights, refugees, climate action, robotics and AI, agroecology, unconditional basic income, food, abuse, LGBTQIA+ rights, education, inclusion, animal welfare, racism, reproductive health, decent work, and sustainable communities. Sixty-seven guests, many in the same age group as the target audience, contributed to these campaigns.
The campaigns included 64 films, 21 debates, 17 conversations with artists, 2 scientific lectures, 2 board game sessions, 1 testimonial session, 1 visual art exhibition and 1 waste collection action. As noted in the external evaluation report, the public clearly recognized the transfer of useful knowledge in post-initiative questionnaires. The project also received considerable media attention as part of a festival.
In quantitative terms, the following was achieved:
- 18 awareness raising campaigns carried out;
- 32% share of target group showing civic concerns.
Regarding capacity building, the promoter conducted a needs assessment and prepared an action plan.
