Description
“Insuflar Cinema” is a 12 months project to be implement in Ovar municipality. In a first moment 18 students from Multimedia Vocacional Education (ages 16 to 18) will be involved in a Cinema Club and will discuss and explore several short-movies films, selected by a collaborative curation between our team and world-wide cinema festivals, encompassing all forms of cinema and the best quality movies committed to democratic values. In a second moment, an itinerant Inflatable Cinema will rotate in all schools of Ovar, for children ages 3 to 10 years old. Each session will be followed by informal debates on the themes addressed by the films. This task will be conducted by the 18 students involved in the Cinema Club, introducing the themes and, through this exercise, foster reflection, memory and knowledge on them. The project aims to sow in each individual the seed of a growing infant, or adult, by conceptualizing that Otherness and Equality are the roots of Democracy.
Summary of project results
The aim of the project was to create and develop a pilot program for film literacy. It sought to transform schools into spaces of freedom and creativity, integrate cinema as both an educational and recreational tool, and facilitate discussions and reflections on democracy and civic participation.
The project originally planned two activities: the Cinema Club and the Inflatable Cinema. The latter was completely cancelled due to the pandemic. The Cinema Club, however, was almost fully implemented in two phases: from January to March and from November to December. Although the plan was for 10 sessions, due to the availability of the school, only 9 sessions were in place. The strategy was to have the young people act as cinema programmers for children, promoting responsibility, critical thinking and reflection. The last three sessions had three guests: Catarina Furtado, to talk about her experiences as a UN Goodwill Ambassador, and director Ana Rocha and actress Lucia Moniz with the screening of "Listen". During the second Cinema Club session, the idea of creating a short documentary by the teenagers was proposed and welcomed as a good fit with the multimedia course. The students, in pairs, collected images and sounds in each session, and the documentary was later produced.
In quantitative terms, the following was achieved:
- 14 people educated in civic rights;
- 1 partnerships between NGOs and schools promoting civic education;
- 100% share of target group showing civic concerns.
Regarding capacity building, the promoter conducted a needs assessment and prepared an action plan.
All proposed targets were met and exceeded.
