Description

The “Triple D” project aims to increase democratic engagement and political participation of citizens by working on the links between democracy, demography and human rights. To achieve this, it will develop educational/training sessions and school and community discussion groups, seeking to empower and educate professionals, community workers, children and young people, vulnerable people and the elderly, helping them to analyse and discuss policies and elaborate recommendations for improving democratic dynamics at a local level.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to strengthen the culture of active and participatory citizenship by exploring the connections between democracy, demography, and human rights. The activities included capacity building and awareness-raising sessions, civic campaigns and initiatives, and the promotion of community discussion groups. These efforts were designed to empower target groups, ranging from preschool children to older adults, and to promote human rights education and active citizenship.

The project conducted seven training sessions for the staff of Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra, facilitated by the European Centre for Women and Technology and the European Institute of Cultural Sciences Padre Manuel Antunes. The project also included awareness sessions for various target groups, establishing 54 formal partnerships and involving 32 schools/kindergartens.

Key achievements included 288 sessions for 5,145 children and young people from primary to secondary school, 75 sessions for 1,150 preschool children, 36 sessions for 280 vulnerable adults, 8 sessions for 141 older adults, 12 sessions for 177 participants from the educational community, 4 sessions for 84 students from the Coimbra School of Education, and 74 online activities with 488 participants.

The Youth Parliament activities involved 10 initiatives with 196 participants. The "Intergenerational Citizens" initiative created four discussion groups, focusing on themes like urban rehabilitation, human rights, and civic participation. The project also carried out 56 civic initiatives, including webinars, a virtual camp, and various community activities.

The communication component included the launch of a promotional video, a kit with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Triplo D Toolkit. The project''s website and Facebook page were continuously updated.

In quantitative terms, the following was achieved:

- 9 volunteers recruited by supported NGOs;

- 56 civic initiatives led by supported NGOs;

- 2 awareness raising campaigns carried out;

- 386 people educated in civic rights;

- 54 partnerships between NGOs and schools promoting civic education;

- 17 NGO initiatives promoting access to information on public/private policies;
