Description
The project in question involves the construction of a 12.5 MW biomass boiler and will contribute to the increase production of system heat from renewable energy sources, thus in line with the environmental goals set out in Polish and European strategic documents. The implementation of the project will allow for:
• reducing the emission of pollutants into the air, such as: CO2, NOx, SO2, CO and dust,
• production of heat energy from renewable energy sources and its supply to the municipal network,
• replacing the production of thermal energy from coal with heat from biomass, • improvement of local energy security,
• avoiding investments in coal heat sources,
• lowering the fees for CO2 emissions,
• achieving the status of an effective heating system.
Summary of project results
The need for the above-mentioned investment by Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej in Ełk, which apply to the company''s objectives and which PEC must fulfill. These include:
- the need to reduce air emissions of pollutants such as CO2, NOx, SO2, CO and dust,
- production of thermal energy from renewable energy sources,
- supply of heat from renewable energy sources to the municipal heating network,
- replacing the production of thermal energy from coal with heat from wood biomass,
- improving local and own energy security,
- avoidance of future replacement costs and construction of new coal sources,
- reduction of emission fees,
- achieving an effective heating system referred to in Art. 2 points 41 and 42 of Directive 2012/27/EU, by producing heat using renewable energy sources (biomass) in more than 50%,
The following activities were carried out as part of the project:
- Decommissioning of the coal-fired heat source (WR-25 boiler no. 1), along with its technical infrastructure,
- Construction of a biomass boiler fired with wood chips with the construction of a fuel storage facility and accompanying infrastructure at the PEC Ełk Heat Plant, including:
1) Construction of facilities for the needs of a biomass boiler room, along with the necessary installations:
- adapting the existing building to install a biomass heat source,
- daily biomass storage with a moving floor,
- biomass boiler room hall,
2) Construction of external infrastructure, including:
- maneuvering area and hardened surfaces with drainage,
- electrical installation,
- heating installation,
- Water supply installation,
- sanitary sewage installation,
- installation of internal storm sewage system,
- ash storage containers.
- steel chimney.
3) Delivery and installation of a 12.5 MW biomass-fired boiler, including:
- biomass transport system,
- a fireplace with a stepped grate,
- water (recovery) boiler,
- economizers
- necessary accompanying infrastructure - technological installations,
- exhaust gas removal and treatment system
- I&C boiler automation system
The main goal of the project is to increase the energy efficiency of the company and improve air quality in the City of Ełk Commune. The new installation will be intended for the production of heat energy from renewable energy sources (woody biomass), supplying the municipal heating network. The implementation of the project will bring measurable ecological benefits because it will allow the production of thermal energy from coal dust to be reduced to a minimum, and thus will significantly reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere (CO2, NOx, SO2, dust, including PM10) and, what is equally important, , achieving an effective heating system as a result of the investment.
