Description

A research conducted in Ostróda District revealed that the majority of students remain uninvolved with any extracurricular activities, and volunteering options are not perceived as an attractive form of civic engagement. From our conversations with teachers, we have learned that students lack the initiative and are reluctant to take part in school activities, including being part of the student council. Our goal is to engage the youth, support it in developing its social competences and encouraging more robust social life. We will promote the concept of voluntary engagement among the youth through a series of grassroots initiatives in our district. We will train and prepare young leaders in organizing sporting events for their peers. Along with our partners (rural schools) we plan to create three clubs and a volunteering center. The clubs will host a series of workshops focused on civic engagement, as well as sporting events. Our Sports Volunteers will be the members of the club. They will remain in contact and will support each other in completing their projects, exchanging ideas and motivating one another. Our partners are three rural schools and their students. By creating the clubs using school facilities we will be able to motivate the students to engage with their peers and their school. Our final partner is the municipality of Miłakowo, which will support organizing sporting events and creation of the Volunteering Center, as well as promotion of our project.

Summary of project results

Research conducted in Ostródzki district showed that most students do not engage in any extra-curricular activities and volunteering is not considered an attractive form of civic engagement. Conversations with the teacher revealed that the youth rarely showed any initiative and were reluctant to participate in school life, including student council activities. Our goal was to activate the youth, support the development of social and civic competences, and encourage participation in civic life. To that end, we have trained young leaders to self-organize sporting events for their peers. We also promoted the concept of volunteering by designing and implementing grassroots initiatives in the district, together with the students. We partnered with three rural schools and their students. In collaboration with the host schools, we have created a club that will motivate the students to get more engaged. Our final partner was the Miłakowo municipality, which supported sporting events and the creation of Volunteering Center, as well as promoted our project. Thanks to the flawless cooperation with our partners, we managed to engage the youth in volunteering initiatives and the organization of events. We noticed an increase in their self-esteem, a belief in the value of their work and that it’s being noticed. According to our observations, the young people have developed their interpersonal and collaborative competences.
